The Value of the PMP® Certification

The Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is highly sought after as a professional credential. For many companies, having the PMP Certification implies professional dedication to the field, an important knowledge base and experience level, and technical expertise. Obtaining this certification involves significant time and effort.

As you contemplate putting in all of the work required to prepare for the exam, it is wise to ask yourself if the benefits are worthwhile for your career goals and trajectory. The effort involved is immediate, while evaluating the benefits is an exercise in predicting the future.

PMP Certification Qualifications

To qualify for the PMP Certification you will need to have a 4-year college degree, 36 months experience leading projects, and 35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM® Certification. Alternatively, you will need a high school diploma, 60 months experience leading projects, and 35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM certification.

What is the CAPM Certification?

If you do not qualify to take the PMP Certification, you can prepare for the CAPM Certification instead. The requirements are much lower: a high school diploma (or global equivalent) and 23 hours of project management education completed by the time you apply for the exam.

The CAPM is the first step into the PMP world if you need experience. Proving your dedication to the field with a CAPM Certification can be a strong indicator for some employers and recruiters that you are right for their company.

Top 3 Reasons to Pursue a PMP Certification

1.     Exposure. Gaining the PMP Certification indicates a level of thinking that aligns with the standards, techniques, best practices, and current trends of Project Management.

The PMBOK® Guide from Project Management Institute is the core reference used to certify Project Managers worldwide, and it provides an excellent framework for project management and a common language.

2.     Priority. Many companies give preference to project managers with the PMP certification. If you are working for a consulting agency and you have the PMP credential, you will be more valuable to your firm because of the additional contracts they can win.

3.     Opportunity. Not only will you learn new tricks and techniques to assist you with your project management activities, but you will be able to network with other PMs and distinguish yourself from other candidates in this difficult job market.
